‘Worst we’ve known’: UK turns to imports as drought and heat hit vegetable crops

The UK is experiencing significant vegetable shortages due to extreme heat and drought conditions, forcing supermarkets and restaurants to import produce from Spain and other countries. This shift comes at a time when local crops should be plentiful, highlighting a troubling trend in food security as wholesale prices for staples like tomatoes and lettuce have surged by over 60% and 90%, respectively.

Farmers are struggling to maintain yields, with reports indicating that broccoli production has halved and the English pea harvest is down by a third. Even those with irrigation systems are facing water shortages, raising concerns about the sustainability of domestic agriculture in the face of climate change.

The situation is prompting calls from major retailers for the government to prioritise food security and support farmers in building necessary water storage infrastructure. Without intervention, the UK may face prolonged reliance on imports, affecting both availability and prices of fresh produce.

As the climate crisis intensifies, growers are being urged to adapt by exploring crop varieties better suited to hotter conditions. However, the immediate impacts on prices and availability are likely to be felt by consumers, who may need to adjust to a new normal of fluctuating produce quality and higher costs.
