Pilot Reports Close Encounter with Mysterious Object Near Gatwick

A recent incident involving a passenger plane landing at Gatwick Airport has raised concerns about air safety after a pilot reported seeing a mysterious object described as a ‘flying saucer.’ The object, believed to be a drone, came alarmingly close to the aircraft, flying within 100-300 feet of its wing during descent.

The UK Airprox Board, which investigates near-miss incidents, noted that while the object was very close, no evasive action was necessary as the plane was already turning. This incident highlights the increasing risks posed by drones near airports, which can compromise the safety of commercial flights.

In a related event, another drone sighting occurred at Heathrow Airport, where crew members reported being able to see the drone’s markings and propellers as it approached their aircraft. Such incidents are becoming more frequent, prompting calls for stricter regulations on drone usage near airports.

The implications of these sightings extend beyond immediate safety concerns; they signal a growing need for improved air traffic management systems and regulations to mitigate the risks posed by drones in busy airspaces. As drone technology advances, the aviation industry must adapt to ensure passenger safety remains a top priority.
