In a significant operation, police in Northern Ireland seized 23 illegal scramblers, e-bikes, and e-scooters over two days in Lurgan and Craigavon. This crackdown highlights the growing concern over the safety risks posed by these vehicles, which are often uninsured and not road legal. The operation involved uniformed officers and a drone from the Air Support Unit, indicating the seriousness of the issue.

Sgt Adam Patterson from the Police Service of Northern Ireland emphasized that the seizure reflects the scale of the problem, noting that these vehicles can lead to serious injuries for both riders and the public. The police are set to dispose of the seized vehicles unless owners contest the seizure in court, which could incur additional costs.

The operation also led to the arrest of a 17-year-old boy for riding a stolen e-bike and two adult drivers, one of whom has been charged. This initiative not only aims to remove dangerous vehicles from the streets but also to educate young riders about the legal implications and safety concerns associated with their use.

As authorities ramp up enforcement, this operation serves as a warning to those using these vehicles irresponsibly, highlighting the need for safer practices and adherence to road laws. The impact of such operations may lead to a shift in public perception and behaviour regarding the use of e-bikes and scramblers in urban areas.
