Malaysia’s New Hiking Regulations Reflect Social Media’s Impact

Malaysia is tightening hiking regulations due to a surge in rescue incidents linked to social media trends. In the first five months of 2026, the number of lost hikers rose by nearly 30%, prompting government action. Officials noted that many adventurers are ill-prepared, often aiming for social media content instead of prioritising safety.

The trend of ‘compressed hikes’—where hikers tackle difficult routes in a short time—has been particularly concerning. These hikes often encourage risky behaviour as individuals seek to ‘bag peaks’ for social media acclaim. The government has responded by mandating guides in high-risk areas and banning certain compressed hikes to reduce risks and rescue operations.

These measures aim to mitigate the financial and manpower strains on search and rescue services, which are often needed when hikers become lost or stranded. Enhanced pre-climb checks, such as health declarations and insurance requirements, will also be introduced to ensure better preparedness.

As hiking becomes increasingly popular, the challenge will be balancing adventure with safety. The new regulations reflect a growing awareness of the dangers posed by social media-driven behaviours in outdoor activities, ultimately encouraging a more responsible and sustainable approach to hiking in Malaysia.
