The Hidden Crisis of Child Begging in Senegal

In Senegal, a troubling practice has emerged where young boys, known as talibés, are sent to Qur’anic schools with the expectation of receiving education. However, many of these boys, some as young as five, are forced to beg on the streets instead. This exploitation is often disguised as a traditional educational practice, but human rights groups are raising alarms about the trafficking and abuse these children face.

The marabouts, or religious teachers, who are supposed to educate these boys sometimes prioritize financial gain over their welfare. Reports indicate that some talibés are given daily begging quotas, facing severe consequences if they fail to meet them. This shift from community-supported education to profit-driven practices has led to a rise in human trafficking, with children being sent from impoverished rural areas to urban centres under false pretenses.

Many of these children live in squalid conditions, often without basic necessities like clean water or proper shelter. The psychological and physical toll on them is immense, with instances of abuse and neglect reported. As urbanisation continues to change the landscape of education in Senegal, the plight of these talibés highlights a growing crisis that demands urgent attention.

This situation not only affects the lives of the children involved but also raises broader questions about societal values and the responsibilities of communities towards their most vulnerable members. As awareness grows, there is hope for reform and support systems that can protect these children and ensure they receive the education they deserve.
