New York and Paris Lead Global Tourism Rankings

A recent study has revealed that New York and Paris are the top cities in the Global Tourism City Attractiveness Index for 2026. This ranking, developed by Yanolja Research in collaboration with Purdue University and Kyung Hee University, shifts the focus from traditional metrics like visitor numbers to emotional engagement and recognition in global travel discussions.

The index evaluates cities based on ‘cognitive awareness’ and ‘affective attractiveness.’ Cognitive awareness measures how well-known a city is, while affective attractiveness assesses how enjoyable and memorable the experiences are for visitors. This approach highlights a growing trend where emotional connections to destinations are becoming crucial for tourism competitiveness.

Interestingly, while New York and Paris dominate the overall rankings, Asian cities like Osaka and Kyoto excel in attractiveness. This indicates a shift in global tourism dynamics, where cities that offer unique, shareable experiences are more appealing than those with just iconic landmarks.

As travel preferences evolve, cities must adapt by enhancing their emotional appeal to attract visitors. This trend could reshape tourism strategies, influencing how destinations market themselves and engage with potential travellers, ultimately impacting local economies and cultural exchanges.
