Closure of Glasgow Drug Service Raises Concerns Over Support Access

A residential drug service in Glasgow run by Turning Point Scotland is closing due to a financial dispute with its landlord. This decision affects 87 individuals who relied on the facility for support in stabilising their drug use. Instead, a nearby crisis centre will relocate to the Commerce Street site, raising alarm over the loss of 16 crucial beds dedicated to residential stabilisation.

The service’s closure is symptomatic of broader issues within Glasgow’s drug support system, particularly concerning the increasing costs of rent and repairs, which have doubled for Turning Point Scotland. Experts warn that the shift from residential care to community-based services may not adequately meet the needs of those requiring intensive support, further exacerbating existing vulnerabilities in the community.

While the Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership plans to ensure a seamless transition to the crisis centre, there are significant questions about how the remaining support structures will function without residential options. The urgency of the situation is compounded by a lack of clarity regarding contractual obligations and the financial sustainability of the remaining services.

As various charities face similar disputes with City Property, this case highlights the challenges faced by organisations trying to provide essential services amid rising operational costs. The implications of this closure could lead to a significant gap in support for those struggling with addiction, necessitating immediate attention from policymakers and stakeholders in Glasgow’s health services.
