Scotland’s Exam Results: A Closer Look at Trends and Gaps

Scotland’s recent exam results reveal a slight increase in pass rates across National 5, Higher, and Advanced Higher qualifications, with 79.2% of students achieving A, B, or C grades in National 5 exams. However, the persistent attainment gap remains a concern. While the gap between the top and bottom socio-economic groups has narrowed, it still stands at 15.6 percentage points at National 5, highlighting ongoing inequalities in education.

Gender disparities are also evident. Female students outperformed males across all levels, though the gap at Advanced Higher widened, suggesting complexities in educational achievement that require further examination. This could influence future educational policies aimed at addressing gender biases in academic performance.

Geographical differences in results show that students in affluent areas tend to achieve higher grades, with East Renfrewshire leading in National 5 passes. In contrast, students in remote areas face significant challenges, reflecting broader socio-economic divides that could impact community development and workforce readiness.

Finally, the performance of students with additional support needs continues to lag behind their peers, with an 8.9 percentage point gap at National 5. This highlights the need for targeted support strategies to ensure all students have equitable opportunities to succeed in Scotland’s educational landscape.
