The NHS is being urged to prepare for summer heat pressures similar to those faced during winter flu seasons. Health Secretary Yvette Cooper highlighted that extreme heat, exacerbated by climate change, is leading to increased A&E attendances, with hospitals experiencing overcrowding typically seen in colder months. Cooper noted that the government plans to invest in NHS infrastructure to enhance resilience against high temperatures. The Climate Change Committee has warned that the UK’s infrastructure is ill-equipped for rising temperatures, advocating for air conditioning in all hospitals and care homes within the next decade.
