Reform UK Proposes Tough Penalties for Employers of Illegal Workers

Reform UK has announced a bold plan to combat illegal employment by proposing that company bosses face imprisonment if their firms hire illegal workers. This initiative aims to deter companies from profiting without facing consequences, particularly in sectors like gig and delivery services, where illegal employment is prevalent. The party’s home affairs spokesperson, Zia Yusuf, argues that this practice undermines the economy and limits job opportunities for young British citizens.

The proposed legislation would hold chief executives and directors personally liable for illegal employment, akin to existing financial regulations. This could significantly change the landscape for businesses, as it shifts the burden of compliance directly onto senior management, regardless of their knowledge of workers’ legal status. Such a move could lead to a cultural shift in how companies approach hiring practices and compliance with immigration laws.

In addition to criminal penalties, Reform UK plans to introduce a public reporting hotline for suspected illegal working, incentivising citizens to report violations. Successful prosecutions could result in financial rewards for informants, creating a community-driven approach to enforcement. This could lead to increased scrutiny of businesses and a potential rise in compliance costs.

While the Home Office claims to be enhancing penalties for illegal employment, Reform UK’s proposals could introduce the most stringent measures globally. The effectiveness of these measures will depend on their implementation and the willingness of businesses to adapt to a more rigorous regulatory environment.
