Urgent Measures Needed to Safeguard the Welsh Language

Campaigners are calling for radical action to protect the Welsh language, highlighting a critical moment for its future. With the Welsh government aiming for one million speakers by 2050, the recent census showed a decline in fluent speakers, raising alarms about the language’s viability in rural areas.

The National Eisteddfod, a cultural festival currently underway, has become a focal point for discussions on the language’s preservation. Activists argue that without immediate and significant measures, Welsh-speaking communities could face further erosion, impacting cultural identity and heritage.

Education and Welsh language Cabinet Secretary Anna Brychan has acknowledged the ambitious target but admits achieving it will be challenging. The government plans to launch a consultation this autumn to explore strategies for revitalisation, but campaigners stress that swift action is essential before the next Senedd election in 2030.

As adult learners increase, there is hope for the language’s revival. However, misconceptions about fluency persist, complicating efforts to accurately gauge the number of speakers. The urgency for change is palpable, as advocates push for a comprehensive approach to ensure the Welsh language thrives in the years to come.
