Power Outage Disrupts Train Services in North-West England

Train services across North-West England are still facing disruptions following a significant power outage that occurred on Thursday afternoon. The incident, which affected over 400 postcodes in Manchester, halted operations at the Manchester Rail Operating Centre, the key control hub for the region’s railways.

The power cut, caused by an issue with a high voltage cable, left many trains stranded as signalling systems switched to red. Although Network Rail has restored most services, the initial failure of back-up generators delayed recovery efforts, leading to widespread cancellations and delays.

Passengers are advised to remain vigilant as some disruptions are expected to continue into Friday. To ease travel, ticket restrictions have been relaxed, allowing passengers to use alternative transport options like buses and trams in Greater Manchester.

Network Rail is currently investigating the outage to prevent future occurrences. The incident highlights vulnerabilities in infrastructure that can significantly impact daily commutes and the flow of people across the region, raising questions about the reliability of power systems supporting essential services.
