Suspension of Mexican Avocado Exports: What It Means for Prices and Supply

The recent suspension of avocado inspections from Mexico to the U.S. has significant implications for both countries. With over 80% of avocados consumed in the U.S. coming from Mexico, any disruption can lead to increased prices and potential shortages in American grocery stores. The halt was prompted by security concerns in Michoacan, a region notorious for cartel activity, which raises questions about the safety of U.S. inspectors and the integrity of the supply chain.

As Mexican authorities deploy additional troops to Michoacan, the urgency to resume exports is clear. The avocado industry employs around 200,000 people in the region, and prolonged disruptions could impact livelihoods and escalate extortion payments to cartels. Producers are already facing pressures, paying significant fees for exporting their goods, which could rise if inspections remain suspended.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s role in inspecting avocados is crucial to prevent pests from entering the country. Without these inspections, the flow of avocados is halted, which not only affects consumers but also the financial stability of Mexican farmers. The situation is further complicated by the fact that only one other state, Jalisco, is authorized to export avocados, and its production volume is much lower.

Historically, these export suspensions have been resolved quickly, but the underlying issues of cartel violence and extortion remain. As both nations navigate this complex situation, the future of avocado exports hangs in the balance, with potential ripple effects on prices and availability in the U.S. market.
