The Long-Term Impact of Sudan’s War on Education

The ongoing civil war in Sudan has left over 8 million children out of school, with nearly three-quarters of educational institutions affected. This alarming statistic highlights a significant threat to the future of an entire generation, as the conflict continues to disrupt education and safety for children.

The UN warns that the war, now in its third year, is not just a humanitarian crisis but a potential catastrophe for Sudan’s youth. Many parents are opting to keep their children at home, fearing for their safety in classrooms that have been damaged or repurposed for military use. This decision, while protective, further exacerbates the educational crisis.

With more than half of Sudan’s teachers unpaid, the educational system is on the brink of collapse. The UN has managed to reintegrate over a million children into some form of learning this year, but this effort falls drastically short of what is needed to address the widespread educational deprivation.

As the conflict drags on, the long-term implications for Sudan’s societal structure and economic stability become increasingly dire. The loss of education for millions of children not only threatens their future but also the country’s potential for recovery and growth in the years to come.
