Typhoon Dolphin’s Impact on Japan and China: What You Need to Know

Typhoon Dolphin has struck Japan’s southern regions, causing injuries and widespread blackouts, particularly in Okinawa and Amami Island. The storm’s intensity has prompted immediate responses, including the closure of ports and suspension of ferry services in preparation for its expected path toward China.

As the typhoon approaches, Chinese authorities have raised their coastal typhoon alert to the highest level. This proactive measure includes halting port operations and suspending 162 passenger ferry routes, highlighting the potential for significant disruption in trade and travel along the eastern and southern coasts of China.

The storm is anticipated to bring heavy rainfall, with forecasts predicting over 600 mm in some areas, which could lead to flooding and further infrastructure challenges. Airports, such as Ningbo Lishe International, are also halting operations, affecting both domestic and international travel.

In addition to the immediate weather impacts, the situation has escalated political tensions between Taiwan and China. Beijing’s directive for ships in the Taiwan Strait to comply with its traffic control has been met with strong opposition from Taipei, which views this as an infringement on international rights. This incident underscores the ongoing geopolitical frictions in the region, exacerbated by natural disasters.
