Migrants Using Public Transport to Reach UK via Small Boats

Recent reports indicate that hundreds of migrants are taking trains and buses from Calais to France’s southern coast, where they launch small boats towards the UK. This shift in strategy highlights a growing trend among migrants to evade detection by authorities, as they travel further down the coast to embark on their journeys across the English Channel.

The situation has raised concerns about the effectiveness of current border control measures. Migrants are reportedly boarding public transport without tickets, often in large groups, making it difficult for authorities to intervene. This method not only complicates enforcement efforts but also suggests a coordinated approach by smuggling networks to exploit gaps in the system.

As weather conditions remain favourable, experts warn that a surge in crossings is imminent. The use of larger vessels, capable of carrying more than 150 individuals, indicates a shift in tactics by smuggling gangs, potentially leading to increased risks for those attempting the journey.

The UK government’s attempts to manage the crisis through cooperation with France face challenges, as many deported migrants are returning. This ongoing situation underscores the complexities of addressing illegal crossings and the need for effective, long-term solutions to the migrant crisis.
