A recent study has revealed that obesity may be responsible for a larger proportion of cancer cases than previously estimated. Researchers now suggest that up to 11.5% of cancers could be linked to excess body weight, particularly abdominal fat, which poses a greater risk for women. This finding challenges earlier beliefs that only 2% to 8% of cancer cases were attributable to obesity.
The study, which analysed data from over 458,000 participants in the UK Biobank, highlights the importance of fat distribution in assessing cancer risk. Unlike traditional measures like body mass index (BMI), which do not differentiate between fat and muscle, the study focused on waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratios. This approach revealed a clearer connection between obesity and cancer, particularly for hormone-dependent cancers in women.
One significant implication of this research is the potential for obesity prevention to play a crucial role in cancer prevention strategies. By addressing obesity, public health initiatives could significantly reduce the incidence of various cancers, alongside other health issues like cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
As awareness of the obesity-cancer link grows, it may prompt changes in health policies and personal health behaviours. The findings underscore the need for further research to confirm these results and explore the mechanisms behind the increased risk, particularly in women, as they may face unique hormonal influences related to body fat distribution.
