A group of scouts from the 1st Beddau Scout Group in Rhondda Cynon Taff had an unexpected adventure when they were called to help land a hot air balloon during their camping trip in Tockington, Bristol. As they were setting up camp, balloon pilot Peter De Herdt asked the scouts to assist with the landing of his balloon, which was part of the Bristol Balloon Fiesta’s mass ascent.
The scouts, aged 11 to 14, eagerly participated by using a rope to help guide the balloon down after it landed in a nearby field. This hands-on experience not only provided them with a memorable moment but also allowed them to engage directly with the ballooning process, which is often a rare opportunity for young people.
De Herdt, who flew a vibrant orange and brown balloon, expressed his delight in having the scouts involved, noting their enthusiasm and the joy of sharing the experience with them. Scout leader Matthew Bailey highlighted that this event marked a fantastic start to their week-long camping adventure, making it a trip they would likely remember for years to come.
