Citroën’s AI Proposal to Tackle Potholes Could Save Billions

Citroën is urging the UK government to mandate the use of artificial intelligence for road inspections to address the country’s pothole crisis. The car manufacturer’s report, titled The Better Roads Manifesto, suggests that implementing AI could lead to significant savings, potentially up to £5.5 billion, by streamlining repair processes and ensuring consistent standards across local authorities.

Currently, the UK faces an estimated one million potholes, with local councils using varied criteria for what constitutes a pothole needing repair. This inconsistency leads to inefficiencies and increased costs for drivers, who collectively spend more on vehicle damage than the government allocates for road repairs. Citroën’s proposal aims to standardise inspections and repairs, enhancing accountability for utility companies and local councils.

The report highlights that nearly 30% of drivers have lost control of their vehicles while avoiding potholes, underscoring the urgent need for a systematic approach to road maintenance. By adopting AI technology, councils could quickly identify and prioritise the most dangerous potholes, improving safety and reducing repair times.

As the government introduces new funding rules for road maintenance, Citroën’s call for a five-year funding plan and a national standard for repairs could reshape how the UK addresses its road infrastructure challenges, ultimately benefiting both drivers and local authorities.
