Elections in Pakistan-administered Kashmir: Unrest and Postponements

Voting in Pakistan-administered Kashmir’s Legislative Assembly elections has been significantly impacted by unrest, with only four out of eleven constituencies proceeding as planned. The remaining seven, primarily in the Poonch division, were postponed due to security concerns and calls for a boycott from local groups. This situation highlights the growing tensions in the region, where protests have turned violent, resulting in numerous casualties.

The Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), which has been at the forefront of these protests, demands the abolition of reserved seats for displaced Kashmiris. Their actions have led to a crackdown by authorities, including a ban on international media reporting, raising concerns about transparency and human rights in the electoral process.

The elections are crucial as they determine the composition of the 53-member Legislative Assembly, with significant implications for local governance and political stability. The turnout in previous phases has been notably lower than in past elections, reflecting public disillusionment amid ongoing violence and unrest.

As the situation develops, the postponed elections will need to be rescheduled, and the government’s response to the unrest will be closely scrutinised. The outcome could reshape the political landscape in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, affecting both local and regional dynamics.
