How a Toy Store Job Sparked a Feminist Awakening

Working at Toys R Us as a teenager was more than just a job; it was a formative experience that shaped my views on consumerism and gender roles. Selling toys felt joyful, yet I quickly noticed the pervasive gendered language that dictated how products were marketed and sold. This language often limited children’s play experiences and reinforced stereotypes, prompting me to challenge customers who asked for ‘boys’ or ‘girls’ toys.

During my time there, I witnessed the extremes of hyper-consumerism, especially during the frantic holiday shopping seasons. The harsh retail environment, designed to keep shoppers unaware of time, highlighted the relentless pursuit of profit over sustainability. I learned about the fleeting nature of trends and the impact of consumer choices on the environment, as many toys would end up discarded soon after the holidays.

This job also exposed me to the complexities of capitalism, from the excitement of collectible toys to the pressures of retail work. I engaged with customers of all ages, from children to adult collectors, and saw firsthand how deeply ingrained consumer culture is in our society. Each interaction reinforced my understanding of the retail industry’s role in shaping desires and identities.

Ultimately, my experience at Toys R Us was a catalyst for my feminist awakening and a critical lens through which I view consumer culture today. It was a job that not only provided me with pocket money but also radicalised my understanding of gender and capitalism, leaving a lasting impact on my life choices and career path.
