Colombia Earthquake: Rising Casualties and Infrastructure Damage

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.4 struck western Colombia, resulting in a rising death toll now exceeding 100. Cities like Cali and Pereira were severely impacted, with many buildings collapsing and residents trapped under rubble. Rescue operations are underway, but the scale of destruction poses significant challenges.

The earthquake’s epicenter was near the Choco province, affecting major population centers including Cali, which reported at least 20 collapsed structures. The national government has declared a state of emergency, prioritising rescue efforts and assessing damage to infrastructure, including health centres and schools.

Air travel has also been disrupted, with several airports reporting damage and suspending operations for safety assessments. This disruption could have broader implications for emergency response and recovery efforts, as well as for local economies reliant on air transport.

As the situation develops, the international community, including the US, is monitoring the crisis and offering support. The earthquake highlights Colombia’s vulnerability to seismic activity, given its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire, raising concerns about future preparedness and resilience against natural disasters.
