Recognising Anaemia: Seven Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore

Anaemia affects millions in the UK, yet many remain unaware of its subtle symptoms. Often mistaken for everyday fatigue or stress, these signs can lead to serious health issues if overlooked. Pharmacist Amir Bhogal highlights that unrelenting fatigue is often the first indicator, as low red blood cell counts hinder oxygen transport, leaving individuals drained despite adequate rest.

Breathlessness during routine activities is another overlooked symptom. As the body struggles to compensate for reduced oxygen, even simple tasks can become exhausting. Cold chills, particularly in extremities, may signal iron deficiency anaemia, especially in those with risk factors like heavy menstrual periods.

Recurring headaches that are not linked to stress or dehydration can also indicate anaemia, as the brain attempts to increase blood flow. Additionally, pale skin, often dismissed as a seasonal issue, can reflect low haemoglobin levels, while brittle nails may signal a lack of essential nutrients.

Finally, brain fog can severely impact daily life, making concentration difficult. Recognising these signs is crucial; consulting a pharmacist can lead to timely interventions, including dietary changes or blood tests, ensuring that undiagnosed anaemia does not go untreated.
