Strabane is rallying its residents and businesses to support its bid for UK Town of Culture 2028. Following a shortlist announcement that saw it selected from over 400 contenders, the Derry City and Strabane District Council is urging the community to showcase their pride and creativity in the final submission due by the end of November.
The bid’s significance extends beyond mere recognition; it represents an opportunity for cultural revitalisation, especially as the town faces challenges like the prolonged closure of its main arts venue, the Alley Theatre. This closure has left a gap in local cultural offerings, making the bid even more crucial for community morale and engagement.
Mayor Grace Uí Niallais emphasised the importance of collective effort, stating that the bid reflects the town’s resilience and ambition. The council is developing an extensive engagement programme to ensure that the final submission captures the spirit and potential of Strabane’s residents.
Winning the title could bring £3 million for a year-long cultural programme, alongside two runners-up receiving £250,000 each. This funding could significantly enhance local arts and community initiatives, creating a lasting cultural legacy and transforming Strabane’s cultural landscape for years to come.
