Revived Train Service Connects Finland and Sweden After Decades

A long-abandoned train route between Oulu, Finland, and Haaparanta, Sweden, has resumed operations for the first time since the early 1990s. This revival, initiated by Finland’s state-owned railway, VR, comes as demand for travel to Nordic destinations rises, particularly among those seeking unique experiences away from traditional southern European hotspots.

The new service, which began on August 10, 2026, offers 28 trains per week, making it easier for passengers to explore the scenic Gulf of Bothnia coast. The journey takes approximately one hour and 40 minutes, with ticket prices starting as low as €5.40 (£4.60) for off-peak travel. This affordable option could encourage more cross-border tourism, benefiting local economies in both countries.

Historically, the route was suspended due to declining demand and logistical challenges, including differing rail gauges that necessitated transfers at the border. However, Finland is currently updating its rail infrastructure to align with European standards, which could further enhance connectivity and ease of travel.

As Oulu prepares for its role as the 2026 European Capital of Culture, this train service not only facilitates travel but also promotes cultural exchange and tourism. The revival signals a shift in travel trends, with more people looking to explore the Nordic region, potentially reshaping travel patterns in Europe.
