Fragile Peace: The Legacy of the Ohrid Agreement in North Macedonia

Twenty-five years after the Ohrid Framework Agreement, North Macedonia’s peace remains precarious. While ethnic Macedonians and Albanians coexist without armed conflict, analysts warn that true reconciliation is still elusive. The political landscape has shifted, with the conservative VMRO-DPMNE party now in power, leading to concerns about the erosion of rights for the Albanian minority.

The Ohrid Agreement established power-sharing mechanisms aimed at ensuring minority representation. However, recent political developments have raised alarms about the potential dismantling of these protections. Ethnic tensions are resurfacing, with accusations from both sides regarding discrimination and unfair advantages in public sector recruitment.

Observers note that while institutional changes have occurred, they have not translated into improved relations between communities. Segregated education systems and a lack of dialogue exacerbate misunderstandings, highlighting the need for platforms to foster open discussions about differing perspectives.

As North Macedonia grapples with stalled EU integration and internal divisions, the future of the Ohrid Agreement’s gains hangs in the balance. The ongoing political crisis could threaten the stability that has been maintained for over two decades, prompting urgent calls for renewed commitment to the principles of the agreement.
