Law Society Faces Backlash Over Chief’s Involvement with Sex Offender

The Law Society of Northern Ireland is set to hold a special meeting in response to significant member discontent regarding its chief executive, David Lavery. The controversy stems from Lavery providing a character reference for his cousin, William Lloyd-Lavery, who was convicted of indecent assault. This incident has raised serious questions about the governance and ethical standards within the Law Society.

Members have expressed their concerns through a petition that gathered over 50 letters calling for a Special General Meeting. They aim to discuss Lavery’s continued position as chief executive and to vote on potential motions, including demands for his resignation. The urgency of the meeting highlights a growing distrust among solicitors towards the leadership of the Law Society.

Lavery’s recent dismissal from his role as a human rights commissioner adds further gravity to the situation, as he faces scrutiny over his decision-making process. His public apology for what he described as a “serious error in judgement” has not quelled the outrage, as many seek a more substantial acknowledgment of the harm caused.

Solicitor Jonathan McKeown, who initiated the call for the meeting, believes an independent investigation is necessary to restore trust in the Law Society. The outcome of this meeting could have lasting implications for how legal institutions address ethical accountability and member trust moving forward.
