Mother’s Anguish Over Potential Early Release of Son’s Killer

Jodie Taylor, mother of Daejaun Campbell, who was murdered in 2024, expressed her devastation upon learning that one of her son’s killers, Marko Balaz, may be released early due to changes in sentencing laws. The new Sentencing Act 2026 allows for earlier release for certain prisoners, which Taylor believes undermines justice for victims and their families.

Balaz, convicted of manslaughter and originally sentenced to 11 years, could benefit from a new scheme aimed at reducing prison overcrowding. Taylor received notification from the Probation Service that this change could affect Balaz’s eligibility for early release, leaving her feeling betrayed by a system she believes should protect victims.

The reforms, intended to improve offender management, have raised concerns about public safety, especially since Balaz was on electronic monitoring at the time of Daejaun’s death. Taylor argues that the message sent by such leniency is damaging, particularly for families who have suffered violent losses.

As the new release criteria take effect, many fear it may lead to increased risks of reoffending. Taylor’s experience highlights the emotional toll on victims’ families and raises questions about the balance between rehabilitation and public safety in the justice system.
