Why Southern Water Won’t Impose a Hosepipe Ban Despite Drought Conditions

Southern Water has announced it will not implement a hosepipe ban in Sussex, even as local rivers experience exceptionally low levels. This decision comes despite a report from the Environment Agency indicating significant decreases in river flows, including the River Arun and River Rother, following one of the driest summers on record.

The water company reassured customers that its reservoir levels remain above those recorded during the 2022 drought, with current capacity at 64.8%. This contrasts with last year’s figures, which dipped to 57.2%. Southern Water is closely monitoring the situation, especially with more than two-thirds of England now classified as being in drought.

Interestingly, the last meaningful rainfall in the South East occurred two months ago, marking July as the driest month since records began in 1836. Despite these alarming conditions, Southern Water has stated it will prepare for potential dry spells this winter without immediate restrictions.

This situation highlights the complexities of water management in the UK, where demand and supply must be balanced. The absence of a hosepipe ban now could signal a shift in how water companies respond to drought conditions in the future, potentially affecting household water usage and conservation behaviours.
