Wildfires in Indonesia Endanger Rescued Orangutans

Record wildfires in Indonesia are posing a severe threat to orangutans rescued from wildlife traffickers. The flames have come alarmingly close to the Yiari orangutan rehabilitation centre in West Kalimantan, forcing staff to relocate the animals to safer enclosures. This crisis is exacerbated by extreme weather conditions linked to a powerful El Niño and ongoing climate change, which have led to a dramatic increase in fire outbreaks this year.

In the first half of August alone, Indonesia reported over three times the number of forest fire hotspots compared to the same period last year. The situation is particularly dire in West Kalimantan, where the region has experienced 40 days without rain, leading to rapid fire spread. Local authorities are actively combating the blazes, but the air quality is deteriorating, posing risks not only to the orangutans but also to the broader ecosystem.

The Yiari centre’s director has described the firefighting efforts as relentless, with teams working tirelessly to control the flames. Although the immediate threat to the orangutans has stabilised, the meteorological agency warns that the hot and dry conditions are likely to persist, increasing the risk of further outbreaks.

As the peak fire season approaches in September and October, the centre is seeking additional funding for firefighting equipment. This situation highlights the urgent need for enhanced fire management strategies to protect both wildlife and their habitats in Indonesia.
