Gaza Farmers Find Hope in Small-Scale Agriculture

In the aftermath of extensive destruction in Gaza, small-scale agricultural projects are becoming a beacon of hope for displaced farmers. Mohammad al-Halabi, who lost his large farm to conflict, is now tending to a modest plot in Nuseirat, nurturing seedlings in a bid to reclaim his agricultural roots. Despite the challenges, he finds solace in seeing his plants grow, a reminder of his lifelong connection to farming.

The agricultural sector in Gaza has faced catastrophic losses, with over 87% of farmland destroyed and critical infrastructure like wells and irrigation systems severely damaged. This has led to a dramatic decline in food production, threatening the livelihoods of many families. Naser Deeb from Gaza’s Ministry of Agriculture highlights the extensive rehabilitation needed before farmers can return to their lands, indicating a long road ahead for recovery.

Some farmers are responding to these challenges by establishing small-scale projects. For instance, Mohammad Abdul Naser Hassan al-Jadba, forced to abandon his land due to conflict, has successfully rented a plot to create a nursery and greenhouse. With support from a Belgian fund, he has transformed his situation, generating a monthly income that allows him to support his family and employ others.

These small agricultural initiatives not only provide immediate financial relief but also foster a sense of community and resilience among Gaza’s farmers. As they navigate the complexities of rebuilding their lives, these projects signify a critical step towards restoring food security and economic stability in the region.
