Latin America’s Shift Towards Israel: A New Alliance

In a surprising turn of events, several Latin American countries are rekindling diplomatic ties with Israel, a move that could reshape regional politics. This shift comes as Israel faces increasing isolation due to its military actions in Gaza, yet authoritarian leaders in Latin America see an opportunity to align with Israel and, by extension, the United States.

Colombia’s new government has reversed its predecessor’s stance, announcing plans to relocate its embassy to Jerusalem and recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. This marks a significant departure from the previous administration’s critical approach towards Israel, reflecting a broader trend among right-wing leaders in the region.

Countries like Venezuela and Argentina are also exploring closer ties, with Venezuela resuming consular services and Argentina’s President Milei prioritising relations with Israel as part of his political identity. This warming of relations is not merely symbolic; it represents a strategic alignment with U.S. foreign policy and a rejection of leftist ideologies that have historically opposed Israel.

However, this shift is not universal across Latin America. Brazil and Mexico maintain critical stances towards Israel, highlighting a complex landscape where diplomatic relations can coexist with criticism. As these alliances develop, they could influence international dynamics, particularly in multilateral organizations where support for Israel is crucial.
