Latin America’s Shift Towards Israel: A New Alliance

As Israel faces increasing global isolation due to its military actions in Gaza, several Latin American countries are forging closer ties with the nation. This shift is particularly notable among authoritarian regimes, which see an opportunity to align with Israel and, by extension, the United States. For instance, Colombia’s new government has reversed its predecessor’s decision to sever diplomatic relations, even planning to relocate its embassy to Jerusalem.

This realignment is not just about diplomatic gestures; it reflects a broader trend where Latin America’s radical right is embracing Israel as part of a shared ideological framework. Leaders like Argentina’s Javier Milei and Colombia’s Abelardo de la Espriella are positioning their countries as allies of Israel, which they view as a partner in countering leftist movements in the region.

However, this warming of relations is not universal. Brazil’s government, under President Lula da Silva, maintains a critical stance towards Israel, highlighting the complexities within Latin America. Mexico, too, is attempting to balance its diplomatic approach, criticizing Israeli actions while preserving relations.

The implications of these shifts are significant. For Israel, strengthening ties with Latin American nations offers a counterbalance to its isolation in international forums. For Latin American countries, these alliances could provide economic and technological benefits, particularly in areas like cybersecurity and military cooperation. This evolving landscape may reshape regional dynamics and influence global perceptions of Israel.
