Council Faces Heavy Fine After Worker Injured in Ladder Fall

Wirral Council has been fined £60,000 following a serious workplace accident where a worker broke his ribs and collarbone after a ladder gave way. The incident occurred while the employee was trying to access a loft space at the Dale Farm site in Heswall. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that the council failed to mitigate risks associated with working at height, leading to life-changing injuries for the worker.

The investigation revealed that the council did not adequately control ladder use, despite being aware of unsafe ladders on site. Employees had not received proper training on ladder safety, which raises concerns about the overall safety culture within the council. This incident highlights the importance of regular safety inspections and training in preventing workplace injuries.

The fine is part of a troubling trend, as councils across the UK have faced over £10 million in fines since 2020 for health and safety breaches. The HSE’s findings suggest that many councils are not prioritising employee safety, which could lead to further incidents and financial repercussions.

As councils grapple with these issues, the implications extend beyond immediate fines. Poor safety practices can lead to increased insurance costs, potential legal actions, and a damaged reputation, ultimately affecting public trust and employee morale.
