Surge in Unauthorised Traveller Sites Sparks Local Outrage

Unauthorised traveller sites are increasingly appearing across the UK, with a staggering 73% rise since January 2020. This surge, now totaling nearly 5,000 sites, is causing significant distress among local residents, who describe the rapid establishment of these sites as resembling ‘military operations’. The timing of these developments often coincides with Bank Holidays, when local councils are less able to respond effectively, leading to a sense of helplessness among communities.

Local authorities are struggling to manage the situation, with some councillors warning of a ‘loss of control’ over planning regulations. This has resulted in legal disputes and heightened tensions between travellers and local residents. The increase in unauthorised sites is not just a planning issue; it reflects deeper societal challenges regarding housing and community integration, as many travellers feel compelled to break the law to secure a place to live.

The rise in unauthorised sites is also linked to changing methods of land acquisition. Travellers have adapted to digital property sales, which allow them to bypass traditional barriers and discrimination faced in person. This shift has made it easier for them to acquire land covertly, further complicating enforcement efforts by local councils.

As the gap between government rhetoric and local realities widens, the frustration among officials grows. While the government insists that local authorities have the power to tackle unauthorised developments, the speed at which these sites are established often leaves them struggling to keep pace, raising questions about the effectiveness of current policies and the future of community relations.
