Traders Push for Free Parking Amid Roadworks Disruption

Traders in Brighouse, West Yorkshire, are calling for the council to suspend parking charges during ongoing roadworks that have severely impacted local businesses. The Brighouse Independent Shop Keepers (BRISK) have launched a petition demanding at least 30 minutes of free parking to encourage shoppers back to the high street. Many shops have reported a significant drop in footfall, leading to closures and staff reductions.

The roadworks, part of an 18-month £19.1 million regeneration project, began in January and are expected to continue until summer 2027. Despite the long-term benefits anticipated from the upgrades, traders argue that immediate support is crucial to prevent further economic decline. Earlier this year, parking charges more than doubled, exacerbating the situation as customers are deterred by the costs.

Local business owners, like Oliver Blackburn of Webster’s Furniture, have expressed frustration over the increased parking fees, which have risen from 40p to £2 per hour for premium spaces. This financial burden, combined with the disruption from construction, has led to a noticeable decrease in trade, prompting calls for urgent action from the council.

As the community rallies for change, the outcome of this petition could determine not only the survival of local businesses but also the future vibrancy of Brighouse’s high street. With many residents supporting the idea of free parking, the council faces pressure to respond to the needs of both traders and shoppers alike.
