EU’s New Ban on Deepfake Apps: What It Means for Online Safety

The European Parliament has recently agreed to prohibit ‘nudifier apps’ that create non-consensual intimate images using AI. This ban is part of the Digital Omnibus on AI, which aims to tackle the growing issue of deepfakes, particularly those that exploit individuals without their consent. With deepfake pornography making up 98% of all deepfake content online, this legislation signals a significant shift in how Europe addresses digital abuse.

The new regulations specifically target AI systems that generate sexually abusive material, reflecting a growing recognition of the harm caused by such technologies. Companies have until December 2026 to comply, indicating a structured approach to regulating AI tools that can infringe on personal rights. This move is crucial as it sets a precedent for how digital content is managed and protected in the future.

For UK residents, this ban could enhance online safety and privacy, especially for vulnerable groups who are disproportionately affected by deepfake content. As the UK navigates its own digital policies post-Brexit, the implications of these EU regulations may influence future legislation aimed at protecting individuals from digital exploitation.

Looking ahead, it will be important to monitor how these regulations are enforced and whether similar measures will be adopted in the UK. The effectiveness of the ban in reducing the prevalence of deepfake abuse will also be a key indicator of its success, as well as the response from tech companies and users alike.
