Concerns Grow Over IVF Misconduct in Northern Cyprus

A troubling investigation has revealed that at least 30 children, primarily British, may have been conceived using incorrect sperm and egg donors at a clinic in northern Cyprus. Parents, who meticulously selected donors based on detailed profiles, are now questioning the integrity of the IVF process they underwent. Many have reported discrepancies between their children’s appearances and the characteristics of the chosen donors, leading to fears of a broader pattern of deception.

The Dogus IVF Centre, where many of these treatments took place, has been under scrutiny since it was discovered that the world’s largest sperm bank, Cryos International, blacklisted the clinic in 2016. This raises significant concerns about the regulatory environment in northern Cyprus, where clinics operate with minimal oversight, attracting patients with promises of low costs and high success rates.

As families grapple with the implications of these revelations, the emotional and psychological toll is profound. Parents are left not only with uncertainty about their children’s genetic origins but also with a sense of betrayal from a system they trusted. The Ministry of Health in northern Cyprus has launched an investigation, but the lack of transparency raises further alarm about the future of fertility treatments in the region.

This situation highlights the urgent need for stricter regulations and oversight in international IVF practices, especially in areas where legal protections are weak. As more families come forward, the potential for a larger scandal looms, prompting calls for accountability and reform in the industry.
