Almost all UK filling stations have now registered with the Government’s Fuel Finder tool, allowing drivers to find the lowest local fuel prices. This initiative, launched earlier this year, aims to alleviate the financial burden of rising petrol and diesel costs, which have been a concern for many motorists.
With around 97% of petrol stations participating, the tool is expected to significantly impact how drivers approach refuelling. Estimates suggest that users could save between one and six pence per litre, translating to potential savings of up to £9 per tank. This could encourage more drivers to shop around for better prices, fostering competition among retailers.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has noted that most forecourts are now updating their prices regularly, although smaller stations may lag behind due to lower sales volumes. Compliance with the Fuel Finder scheme is being monitored, with penalties for those failing to report prices accurately.
As more motorists engage with the Fuel Finder tool, it could lead to a broader trend of price transparency in the fuel market, ultimately benefiting consumers. This shift may also prompt retailers to adjust their pricing strategies to remain competitive, potentially leading to lower fuel costs in the long run.
