Urgent Call to Ban Child-Like Sex Dolls in the UK

The Liberal Democrats are pushing for a new law to criminalise the possession, sale, and manufacture of child-like sex dolls in England and Wales. This move aims to close a significant legislative gap that currently allows these dolls to be legally sold, despite their potential to normalise harmful sexual behaviours towards children. The proposed Child-like Sexual Abuse Dolls (Offences) Bill would align the possession of these dolls with existing laws on indecent images of children, enabling police to take action against offenders.

Currently, while importing such dolls can lead to prosecution under outdated customs laws, possessing them remains legal. This loophole has raised concerns among child protection advocates, who argue that these dolls can reinforce unhealthy fantasies and behaviours. Munira Wilson, the Liberal Democrat education spokeswoman, emphasised the need for urgent action to protect children, stating that the existence of these dolls is both horrifying and unacceptable.

The proposed legislation would empower law enforcement to seize these dolls and impose penalties on those found guilty of possession. Wilson highlighted that the dolls are often custom-made, making it easier for offenders to evade current laws. By addressing this issue head-on, the bill aims to provide a crucial layer of protection for children and disrupt the behaviours that could lead to real-world harm.

As the bill is set for its second reading in the House of Commons, it requires government support to become law. Advocates stress the importance of public awareness and legislative action to safeguard children from predatory threats, marking this initiative as a vital step in child protection efforts in the UK.
