Unaccompanied Minors in Ceuta Face Dire Risks

In Ceuta, a Spanish enclave on the northern coast of Africa, thousands of unaccompanied minors are living in precarious conditions. Estimates suggest between 3,000 and 5,000 children are on the streets, facing severe risks of illness and abuse. Overcrowded reception facilities have left many without shelter, forcing them to sleep in makeshift tents and endure unsanitary conditions.

The situation has escalated, with reports of rising sexual assaults among minors, particularly affecting young girls. Local authorities acknowledge they are overwhelmed, with calls for increased police presence to protect vulnerable populations. The regional minister for health has described this crisis as the worst in Ceuta’s history, highlighting the urgent need for intervention.

Despite the dire circumstances, many minors express a strong desire to remain in Ceuta rather than return to their home countries. They seek better futures, with aspirations for education and stability. This reflects a broader trend among young migrants who are increasingly determined to pursue opportunities in Europe, even amidst significant challenges.

The Spanish government is considering transferring these minors to the mainland, but no timeline has been established. As local leaders push for more support, the plight of these children raises critical questions about migration policies and the responsibilities of both local and national governments.
