Public Vote to Name Future Storm After Shaun the Sheep

The Met Office is inviting the public to vote for a new storm name inspired by Aardman’s beloved characters, Shaun the Sheep and Timmy. This initiative aims to engage families and weather enthusiasts alike, making storm naming a fun and interactive experience. The winning name will be included in the official storm names list for the 2026/27 season, highlighting the importance of public participation in weather awareness.

Naming storms serves a crucial purpose: it enhances the effectiveness of weather warnings. By associating storms with memorable names, the Met Office hopes to increase public attention to severe weather alerts. This collaboration with Aardman not only brings a playful element to storm naming but also aims to educate the public about the risks associated with severe weather.

Last year, the Met Office received over 50,000 suggestions for storm names, showcasing the public’s creativity and engagement. While whimsical names like Stormy McStormFace were not selected, the process emphasizes community involvement in safety measures. The chosen name will be announced on September 1, but it may take time before a storm bearing the new name actually occurs, as the naming follows an alphabetical order.

This partnership with Aardman coincides with the studio’s 50th anniversary, making it a significant cultural moment. As the public votes, it sparks conversations about weather safety and the impact of storms on daily life, reinforcing the message that understanding weather patterns is essential for everyone.
