Bridge Workers Face Abuse Amid Ongoing Repairs

Workers managing traffic at the Menai Suspension Bridge have been subjected to severe harassment, including bottles of urine thrown at them by frustrated drivers. This abuse comes as they enforce a weight limit to protect the 200-year-old structure during essential repairs, which have been ongoing since October 2022. The situation has escalated to the point where some workers have withdrawn from their posts due to safety concerns.

Deputy Transport Minister Mark Hooper condemned the harassment, emphasising that these workers are simply doing their jobs to ensure public safety. He has urged drivers to remain calm and not to take out their frustrations on staff who are following necessary protocols. The ongoing repairs are expected to last until 2027, causing significant disruption for local traffic.

The local community is feeling the strain, with repeated closures of one of the two main crossings between Anglesey and mainland Wales. Hooper has indicated that the Welsh government is exploring solutions to mitigate the impact on drivers, including better signage and possibly rerouting heavy vehicles.

As the repairs continue, the potential for further abuse could lead to more serious consequences, including the possibility of closing the bridge entirely if staff safety cannot be guaranteed. This situation highlights the broader challenges faced by workers in public service roles, especially during times of infrastructure stress.
