Pollution Threatens 300-Year Fishing Tradition in Wales

Coracle fishing, a tradition on the River Tywi for over 300 years, faces extinction due to severe pollution. Fishermen report a dramatic decline in fish populations, with one stating they caught only one fish in the entire season. This decline not only threatens livelihoods but also erodes a cultural heritage that once thrived on the river’s bounty.

Testing by Save the River Tywi indicates that industrial, agricultural, and human waste is contaminating the water, leading to alarming reports of dead fish floating in the river. Local fishermen are increasingly disheartened, with fewer licenses issued each year, reflecting a loss of hope in reviving the fishery.

The situation has drawn attention from local authorities and environmental groups, with calls for stricter regulations and collaborative efforts to address the pollution. The cancellation of the annual Tywi River Festival due to contamination highlights the broader impact on community engagement and local pride.

As the river’s health deteriorates, the future of coracle fishing hangs in the balance. Without immediate action to mitigate pollution, this centuries-old practice may become a mere memory, signalling a loss of biodiversity and cultural identity in the region.
