Traffic Disruptions Loom as Selby Toll Bridge Faces Repairs

Drivers in Selby are set to face significant disruptions as the Selby Toll Bridge will be closed to traffic each time a vessel passes beneath it. This could lead to around 1,250 stoppages annually, causing congestion and delays in the area. The bridge, which has been damaged by a boat collision, is nearing the end of its operational life, prompting North Yorkshire Council to seek £89 million from the government for its replacement.

The council’s deputy leader highlighted the urgent need for repairs, warning that without immediate action, the town could face severe traffic issues. The A63 bypass bridge, which also requires attention, is currently unable to function properly due to deteriorating systems. This situation not only affects local traffic but could also impact the broader transport network, making journeys longer and less reliable.

The rising costs associated with the repairs have raised concerns among local officials, with estimates ballooning from £30 million to nearly £92 million. This inflation in costs reflects the urgent need for infrastructure investment in the region. If the bridges are not repaired soon, Selby could find itself increasingly isolated, as alternative routes are significantly longer.

As the council awaits a response from the Department for Transport, residents and commuters are left to navigate the implications of these necessary but disruptive repairs. The future of Selby’s transport network hinges on timely funding and action to restore these vital crossings.
