Northern Ireland Sees Significant Rise in Disposable Income

Northern Ireland has recorded the largest increase in disposable income of any UK region, with a rise of 4.1% in 2024. This growth is attributed to inflation-linked increases in benefits, pensions, and the minimum wage, which significantly impact the region due to its high proportion of minimum wage earners and benefit recipients.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures indicate that while the UK average disposable income rose by 3.1%, Northern Ireland’s increase is notable. The region’s average disposable income now stands at £22,258, slightly below the north west of England, but it has improved its relative position within the UK over the past decade.

Lisburn and Castlereagh boasts the highest average disposable income in Northern Ireland at £24,515. Despite this positive trend, the overall economic landscape remains mixed, with London still far ahead with an average of over £36,000 per head.

This rise in disposable income could lead to increased consumer spending in Northern Ireland, potentially stimulating local businesses and the economy. However, the long-term sustainability of this growth will depend on continued wage increases and economic stability in the region.
