Aid Cuts Worsen Somalia’s Child Hunger Crisis

The hunger crisis in Somalia is escalating dramatically as international aid cuts lead to a surge in severe malnutrition among children. UNICEF reports a staggering 32 percent increase in cases of severe acute malnutrition in the first half of 2026, with nearly 1.9 million children projected to be malnourished this year. This alarming trend is exacerbated by the closure of over 200 health and nutrition facilities due to funding reductions.

As the drought continues to devastate the region, displacing approximately 500,000 people, the impact of these aid cuts is profound. Access to essential healthcare and nutrition services is dwindling, pushing vulnerable populations further into crisis. The situation is dire, with one-third of Somalia’s 19 million residents facing severe food shortages, and the potential closure of up to 618 health facilities looms under severe funding scenarios.

The reduction in aid funding, which has dropped by more than 80 percent this year, is attributed to allegations of aid diversion and corruption, leading to Somalia’s exclusion from a significant global humanitarian aid pledge. This has compounded the effects of the ongoing drought, which has already crippled livelihoods and increased the cost of basic necessities like water and food.

Looking ahead, the forecast of a record-strength El Niño climate pattern threatens to worsen the humanitarian crisis, potentially leading to severe flooding. Without immediate intervention and restored funding, nearly a million children and vulnerable women risk losing access to critical nutrition services, further deepening the crisis in Somalia.
