Tropical Storm Moke Threatens Hawaii with Heavy Rain and Winds

Hawaii is bracing for Tropical Storm Moke, which is expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds as it approaches the islands. This storm follows closely on the heels of Hurricane Lala, which caused significant flooding and power outages just a week prior. Residents are urged to prepare by stocking up on essentials, as Moke could exacerbate the already challenging recovery efforts from Lala.

Governor Josh Green has highlighted the potential impact of Moke, especially since many areas are still recovering from the previous storm. With power restoration ongoing, the state is taking proactive measures, including pre-positioning emergency equipment and offering hotel accommodations for those in need. The storm is projected to bring between 130mm to 250mm of rain, with isolated areas potentially receiving up to 380mm.

Meteorologists indicate that while Moke may not directly hit the Big Island, its effects will still be felt, particularly on the southeast and windward sides. The National Hurricane Center has warned that the heavy rainfall could lead to further flooding, compounding the issues already faced by residents.

Looking ahead, Governor Green has cautioned that Moke will not be the last storm, as another weather front is expected to follow shortly after. This ongoing pattern of severe weather poses a significant challenge for Hawaii, highlighting the need for preparedness and resilience in the face of climate-related events.
