First Bus Restricts Evening Travel for Under-16s in Stoke-on-Trent

First Bus has implemented a ban on unaccompanied under-16s travelling alone after 6pm in Stoke-on-Trent, following a rise in antisocial behaviour linked to the recent introduction of free bus travel for children. This decision comes after incidents involving large groups of young people causing disturbances, prompting concerns for the safety of both passengers and drivers.

The free travel scheme, aimed at easing financial burdens during the cost-of-living crisis, has inadvertently shifted the location of antisocial behaviour from residential areas to public transport hubs. Critics argue that the ban unfairly penalises responsible young travellers while failing to address the root causes of the behaviour.

Local officials have expressed disappointment, suggesting that increased monitoring or police presence could have been more effective solutions. They highlight that the behaviour observed is not new but has simply become more visible due to the increased mobility provided by the free travel initiative.

As First Bus continues to navigate these challenges, the situation raises questions about how public transport policies can balance safety with accessibility for young people. The long-term implications of this ban may affect not only travel habits but also the broader discourse on youth behaviour in public spaces.
