Funding Secures Future of Historic Derry Building

The former Danske Bank building in Londonderry, constructed between 1860 and 1879, is set for a significant transformation thanks to over £1.4 million in funding from the Department for Communities. This investment, part of the North West Regeneration Fund, allows the Inner City Trust to purchase and refurbish the building, aiming to revitalize the city centre and support local businesses.

Communities Minister Gordon Lyons highlighted that this initiative not only preserves Derry’s architectural heritage but also stimulates economic growth. The refurbishment is expected to attract new commercial tenants, thereby increasing foot traffic and benefiting surrounding businesses.

The Inner City Trust is already in discussions with potential clients, with hopes of having the building fully occupied soon after renovations are completed. This project is part of a broader strategy to enhance Derry’s Historic City Conservation Area, which has seen previous investments aimed at improving public spaces and infrastructure.

As the building transitions back to commercial use, it is anticipated to become a hub for innovation and economic development, reinforcing Derry’s historical significance while adapting to modern needs. This investment reflects a commitment to ensuring that the city’s rich heritage continues to thrive for future generations.
